Cedar Health came into existence on 1 May 2007. Cedar Health had been formerly known as Salsbury Baptist Home under the previous ownership. Cedar Health’s current ownership is ACC Enterprises LLC. The actual owners, Dennis & Barb Sanvig, bought the facility when it was put up for sale.  As a result of their purchase, this business was able to stay within  Charles City, Iowa, and remain a contributing factor to the local economy. Cedar Health employs approximately 75 -80 employees.

Cedar Health actually offers 3 different levels of care. The least intensive level is Residential Care (RCF). RCF is essentially the nursing home equivalent of Assisted Living. The types of services offered and cost, are extremely similar in comparison. This level of care can have a lot “flexibility” in terms of qualifying criteria for it. Meals, housekeeping, laundry, activities, social work, and non-intensive nursing services are provided. There may be additional/optional charges that can occur and a price guide is provided detailing services and cost. The only stipulation of an RCF is that skilled nursing services can not be provided in this setting. There can be a high degree of independence and “freedom” for those residents living within the RCF environment.  The rates for room & board go from $68.00 to $73.00 per day. This depends on what type of apartment is rented. We also do accept individuals who may require state assistance for funding to pay for rent. Due to this, room rates may be adjusted accordingly. Cedar Health is licensed for 15 RCF beds.

The next level of care is Nursing Facility care (NF). This level of care is the “traditional” type of care most people associate with nursing homes. It is 24 hour nursing services provided, under supervision of professional nursing staff. In addition to nursing services, meals, housekeeping, laundry, activities and social work services are also provided. If a resident has Medicare B, they may be eligible to receive Physical, Occupational, and/or Speech therapy (applied at non-skilled duration) This level of care sometimes is also referred to as ICF (Intermediate Care Facility). Room & Board will vary on the type of room that is rented. Private room is $145.00 per day, Single & Companion Rooms are $137.00 per day. This does not include pharmacy or other ancillary charges that may occur (a price guide is provided detailing ancillary services and costs). Resident purchase of cable TV (if applicable) and/or room phone charges (if applicable) are the responsibility of the resident. Medicare Med D plans can be applied to pharmacy charges if the resident has Med D plan. We do accept Medicaid/Title 19, Long Term Care Insurance Plans, and Private Pay for payment sources.

The last level of care is Skilled Nursing (SNF) Facility services. This is the most intensive level of nursing services that are provided. Examples of skilled nursing services can include physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy (5x a week for each or combination of each), use of tube feeding, or short term IV therapy. The traditional type of nursing services offered under NF level of care is also included in SNF. Typically, this level of care is funded by Medicare Part A and either a Medicare Insurance Supplement or Medicaid acting as a supplement (if applicable) or private co-pay (if applicable). SNF can be also funded by private pay (though that occurs very minimally). SNF services are usually short term and are based on available Medicare skill benefit days (if Medicare is the payer source) and whether a skilled nursing need continues to be demonstrated. A typical SNF stay can be between 4-8 weeks (sometimes shorter or sometimes longer). Under a SNF stay, the only out of pocket charge would be if the resident is in a private room (a $8.00 per day charge is applied, no charge if in a single or in a companion room), cable TV (if applicable), and/or room phone charges (if applicable). Cedar Health is licensed for 50 beds total in the NF/SNF level of care.

Cedar Health also has a specialized care environment to address residents presenting with advanced forms of dementia (including Alzheimer’s). This environment is a contained area with a locked doors to address “wandering” behaviors that can be exhibited by individuals who have advanced dementia. We call this care environment RUTH’S Way  (RUTH is an acronym for Raising Up The Heart). This is a low stimulation care area. Both skilled and non-skilled nursing services can be provided in RUTH’S Way. The room & board for this area is $147.00 per day. There are 16 beds (out of the 50 total)  in this particular care environment. All rooms are companion rooms (2 person room). There are no private or single rooms available.

By having the numerous levels of care, we can provide opportunity for residents to transfer within those levels of care (depending on health need and bed availability). We also have our “sister” facility, Port Charles Assisted Living in Charles City, as a potential option to transfer, for those individuals (who are appropriate) seeking less intensive services after completing a nursing stay at Cedar Health. Again, this would be contingent on whether there is bed availability at Port Charles.

One other thing I wish to point out involves the Sleep Inn Hotel, located in Charles City, Iowa. Any family or friends visiting any resident, who resides at Cedar Health or Port Charles, that requires hotel lodging, can receive a 10% discount by staying at the Sleep Inn. This may require verification by Cedar Health or Port Charles management to ensure the discount is legitimate to grant.
